Relationships in Astrology: Check Your Sign Compatibility
Love in astrology is more than your sun sign. Check any two signs below, then learn how each one talks, loves and handles conflict.
- Astrologers compare two signs by their distance on the zodiac wheel: same sign, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 signs apart.
- Signs in the same element feel easiest. Signs 90 degrees apart create friction that can help you grow. Opposite signs attract.
- Sun signs are a start. Real compatibility also depends on moon signs, communication and effort from both people.

Check how two signs get along
Pick two sun signs. You will see how astrologers read the pair, what comes easily and where to take care.
For fun and reflection. Not a prediction.
How astrologers compare signs
It comes down to the distance between two signs around the zodiac wheel.
| Distance | Name | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Same sign | Conjunction | A mirror. You get each other, flaws too. |
| 1 sign apart | Semi-sextile | Different worlds. Lots to learn, little in common at first. |
| 2 signs apart | Sextile | Friendly and supportive. Easy to cooperate. |
| 3 signs apart | Square | Friction that pushes you to grow. |
| 4 signs apart | Trine | Natural flow. Same element. |
| 5 signs apart | Quincunx | Awkward fit. Needs adjusting. |
| 6 signs apart | Opposition | Magnetic. Each has what the other lacks. |

Quick check: what do you need in love?
When the stars clash: 5 fixes
- Fire and Water: Fire acts fast and Water feels slowly. Name your pace out loud.
- Earth and Air: Earth wants proof, Air wants ideas. Make one plan together, then one open-ended talk.
- Same style (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable): Two Cardinals fight over who leads. Two Fixed signs dig in. Two Mutable signs struggle to decide. Agree who decides what.
- Different talk styles: Ask, “Do you want advice or just to be heard?”
- Clashing Moons: If your emotional needs differ, say what helps when you are upset before the argument starts.

5 questions to ask each other
These work for any pair of signs. Take turns, and listen first.
- What makes you feel most loved?
- What do you need when you are stressed?
- How do you like to settle a disagreement?
- What is one thing you want us to do more of?
- What is one thing you are afraid to ask for?
Next step: compare your full charts
Sun signs are a good start, but full charts say much more. See the free birth chart calculator to find your planets, then compare Venus, Mars and Moon with your partner. Want a book on this? See the 10 best astrology books for beginners.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
Signs that share an element (like Fire and Fire) or sit in a supportive pair (Fire with Air, Earth with Water) usually feel easiest. Easy is not the same as best. Any pair can work with effort.
Can two signs that clash still have a good relationship?
Yes. Signs 90 degrees apart (like Aries and Cancer) create friction, and many couples say that friction helps them grow. What matters more is how you both handle disagreements.
Is sun sign compatibility enough?
No. It is a starting point. Astrologers also compare the Moon, Venus and Mars signs, and the rising sign. That comparison is called synastry.
What is synastry?
Synastry means laying two birth charts over each other to see how the planets connect. Close links between your Venus and their Mars, for example, are often read as strong attraction.
Does astrology say who I should marry?
No. Astrology cannot choose a partner for you or predict how a relationship will end. Use it to understand patterns, then make your own choices.
How we made this page
Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.
How it works
The checker works out how many signs apart your two sun signs are, then shows the classic meaning of that gap plus each sign’s element, style and talking style. It does not look at birth times or other planets.
Sources and background
- The distance method (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition and others) is the classical aspect system used in Western astrology.
- Elements and styles follow standard Western astrological tradition.
- Sign communication and love-style notes are common astrological themes, summarised in our own words.
What this page cannot do
Astrology cannot tell you who to date or whether a relationship will last. No study has shown that sun sign pairs predict relationship success. Use it as a conversation starter, and trust how people treat each other.
