Mercury Retrograde Dates 2026–2027: Calendar, Meaning and What to Do
Every Mercury retrograde date for 2026 and 2027, what it means in plain English, and a short checklist so you can get through it calmly.
Is Mercury retrograde right now?
Mercury retrograde dates 2026
Mercury goes retrograde three times in 2026. Two have ended. The third starts on October 24.
| Retrograde starts | Retrograde ends | Sign | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 26, 2026 | Mar 20, 2026 | Pisces | Ended |
| Jun 29, 2026 | Jul 23, 2026 | Cancer | Ended |
| Oct 24, 2026 | Nov 13, 2026 | Scorpio | Next |
Feb 26 – Mar 20 (ended)
The first retrograde of the year ran entirely in Pisces, the sign of dreams, intuition and blurred lines. It was traditionally a time for rethinking creative plans and being honest about what you were avoiding.
Jun 29 – Jul 23 (ended)
The summer retrograde ran in Cancer, the sign of home and family. Astrologers linked it to old family topics coming back up and to travel and plan changes during the summer.
Oct 24 – Nov 13 (next)
The next retrograde runs in Scorpio, the sign of depth, secrets and money held with others. Traditionally this is a period for finishing old business, reviewing shared finances and saying the honest thing. The pre-shadow period begins in mid-October, so you may notice the themes before October 24. The post-shadow period runs until about November 29.
Mercury retrograde dates 2027
There are three again in 2027. Signs and shadow dates below are approximate and can differ by a day depending on the source and time zone.
| Retrograde starts | Retrograde ends | Signs (start → end) | Post-shadow ends (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 9, 2027 | Mar 3, 2027 | Pisces → Aquarius | Mar 23, 2027 |
| Jun 10, 2027 | Jul 4, 2027 | Cancer → Gemini | Jul 18, 2027 |
| Oct 7, 2027 | Oct 28, 2027 | Scorpio → Libra | Nov 13, 2027 |
Feb 9 – Mar 3, 2027
Mercury backs out of Pisces and into Aquarius. A good window to revisit big ideas before you commit to them.
Jun 10 – Jul 4, 2027
Mercury moves backward from Cancer into Gemini, a sign it rules. Expect mix-ups in messages, plans and travel, so build in extra time.
Oct 7 – Oct 28, 2027
Mercury moves from Scorpio back into Libra. Contracts, agreements and relationships are the themes traditionally put under review.
What is Mercury retrograde?
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and moves faster than Earth. A few times a year it passes us on the inner track, and from Earth it looks as if Mercury slows down, stops and drifts backward across the sky for about three weeks. It is an optical effect. The planet is not really going backward.
In astrology, Mercury rules communication, thinking, travel and technology. So when it appears to go backward, astrologers say those areas can get slower, messier or more reflective. Think of it less as a curse and more as a built-in reminder to double-check things. There is no scientific evidence that it changes real-world events.
What Mercury retrograde means for each element
This is general guidance by sign group. For a more personal reading, look up your sun, moon and rising signs, or try our sun, moon and rising sign calculator.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
You like to move fast, so this is the time to slow down. Pause before sending the bold message or making the big promise. Finish what you started.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Plans and routines get tested. Keep backups, check the numbers twice and give yourself buffer time. Avoid forcing a deadline that needs everything to go right.
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
Communication is your home ground, so mix-ups can feel personal. Confirm details in writing, re-read before you hit send and give people the benefit of the doubt.
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
Old feelings can surface. Let them be information, not orders. A good time to talk honestly with someone from your past, or to close a chapter, but not to make big emotional decisions in one night.
What to do (and avoid) during Mercury retrograde
You do not need to cancel your life. These are small habits that help in any month and are easy to remember during a retrograde.
- Re-read messages and emails before sending
- Back up your phone and computer
- Allow extra travel time
- Finish old projects and clear your inbox
- Review plans, budgets and goals
- Rushing into big purchases, especially tech
- Signing contracts you have not fully read
- Firing off messages while angry
- Making vague plans you cannot confirm
- Assuming people understood you
Messages and communication
Re-read, confirm, slow down. If a message could be read two ways, say it more clearly. If someone replies oddly, ask before you assume.
Travel and plans
Add buffer time between flights and connections, save booking confirmations offline and double-check dates, names and times.
Tech and contracts
Back up before updating anything. Read the fine print twice, and get agreements in writing. If you can wait until after the retrograde to buy a major device, you may.
What is the shadow period?
Mercury spends time in the same part of the sky before and after each retrograde. Astrologers call these the pre-shadow and post-shadow periods.
- Pre-shadow: the weeks before the retrograde starts. Themes begin to show up, such as small delays and second thoughts.
- Post-shadow: the weeks after it ends. Loose ends settle, and the lessons start to make sense. Don’t expect everything to snap back to normal the day Mercury turns direct.
Sources disagree by a few days on the exact shadow dates, so treat them as a guide rather than a deadline.
We send a short email before each Mercury retrograde, with dates and what to watch for.
