Sun, moon and rising calculator FAQ

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not accurately. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so you need your birth time to know it. Without a time, this tool shows your sun sign and the moon sign range for that day, and tells you when the rising sign cannot be known. Your birth certificate or hospital record usually has the time.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Check your birth certificate, ask a parent or relative, or request the record from the hospital or registry. If you cannot find it, tick “I don’t know my birth time”. You will still get your sun sign, and your moon sign if it does not change that day.

What is the difference between sun, moon and rising signs?

Your sun sign is your core identity and what drives you. Your moon sign is your emotional side, what you need to feel safe. Your rising sign, or ascendant, is your outer style and first impression. Together they are called your Big 3.

Is this calculator free and private?

Yes, it is free. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your birth date, time and place are not sent to our server and are not stored.

Does this use tropical or sidereal signs?

Tropical, the system used in Western astrology. Vedic astrology uses sidereal signs, which are about 24 degrees behind, so your Vedic signs will usually differ.

What is the difference between sun, moon and rising signs?
