The Chariot in one minute

Good or bad?Mostly good. It shows progress through focus.
As a personA determined, focused person who keeps going.
As advicePick a direction and hold the reins on competing urges.
As a warningForcing your way. Speed without direction.
How to remember it: Two sphinxes, one dark and one light, pull the chariot in different ways. The driver steers them with will alone.

The Chariot upright meaning

The Chariot shows a figure in armour standing in a chariot, pulled by two sphinxes, one black and one white. There are no reins. The charioteer steers with willpower, holding opposing forces together to move in one direction.

Upright, The Chariot means determination, focus and progress. You may be pushing toward a goal, overcoming obstacles or taking control of a situation. The message is to choose a direction and commit.

A real-life example: someone is studying for an exam while working full time. They are tired, but they keep a clear schedule and push through. The Chariot is that steady, focused drive.

Common mistake: Thinking it is about speed. It is about control of opposing forces.

The Chariot reversed meaning

Reversed, The Chariot suggests lost direction, a lack of control or forces pulling you apart. You may be pushing too hard, becoming aggressive, or drifting with no goal in mind.

  • Signs: feeling stuck, scattered effort, anger or impatience, or doubt about where you are going.
  • What may help: pause, decide on one clear goal and slow down enough to steer.

The Chariot in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

Moving forward together with a shared direction. It can mean working through challenges as a team. Reversed, you may be pulling in different directions or competing instead of cooperating.

If you’re single

You are taking charge of your love life, or moving on with focus. You may be ready to put yourself out there. Reversed, rushing or being too forceful.

The Chariot in career and money

One of the best cards for ambition: a push for a promotion, a clear goal, progress and success. For money, it suggests focus and discipline get results. Reversed, lack of direction or burnout.

The Chariot as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. The Chariot upright leans yes: determination and focus carry you forward. Reversed, it leans not yet: the timing is off or the support is blocked, so wait and look again. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.

What this page cannot do
