The Five of Wands in one minute

Good or bad?Mixed. It shows friction and competition.
As a personA competitive person, a debater, or a group that cannot agree.
As adviceDecide which fight matters, and find a fair way to settle it.
As a warningWasting energy on arguments that go nowhere.
How to remember it: Five young men swing wands at each other in a messy scuffle on open ground.

The Five of Wands upright meaning

Five young men stand on open, uneven ground, each holding a long wand. They swing and cross their wands in a jumble, as if fighting or playing a rough game. Each one wears different coloured clothes, and none of them seems to be winning. The sky behind them is clear blue.

Fives bring challenge after the calm of the Fours. Upright, the Five of Wands means competition, disagreement and clashing ideas. Waite called it mimic warfare, a sham fight more than a real battle. No one is badly hurt, but no one is moving forward either. The card asks you to see whether the struggle is useful, like a debate that sharpens ideas, or just noise that wastes energy.

A real-life example: someone joins a group project where five people all want their own idea chosen. Meetings run long and nothing gets decided. Finally one person suggests a vote and a clear role for each member. The messy arguing before that vote was The Five of Wands.

Common mistake: Reading it as a serious battle. Waite saw it as a mock fight.

The Five of Wands reversed meaning

Reversed, the Five of Wands can show conflict ending, people finding common ground, or a fight you choose to walk away from. It can also mean avoiding a conflict that needs to happen, or a struggle that has moved inside you as stress and self-doubt.

  • Signs: keeping quiet to avoid a row, an inner tug-of-war over a choice, or tension that finally eases after a talk.
  • What may help: say what you need in one calm sentence, listen to the other side, and agree on one shared rule for moving forward.

The Five of Wands in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

Bickering, competing needs or small power struggles. Some friction can be healthy if you both listen. Reversed, a truce, or avoiding a real issue just to keep the peace.

If you’re single

Dating may feel competitive, or more than one person may be interested in you. Try not to turn love into a contest. Reversed, stepping back from drama, or quietly doubting yourself.

The Five of Wands in career and money

Competition for a role, a team with clashing ideas, or a crowded market. Use the pressure to sharpen your skills, and avoid spending just to keep up with others. Reversed, conflict settling, or office tension that nobody names.

The Five of Wands as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. The Five of Wands upright leans not yet: there is too much friction right now, so sort out the conflict first. Reversed, it leans no: the pause has turned into a real stop. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. For a quick one-card answer, try our free yes/no tarot reading.

How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.
