Temperance in one minute
| Good or bad? | Good. It shows balance, patience and healing. |
| As a person | A calm, steady person who helps others find middle ground. |
| As advice | Find the middle way and give things time to blend. |
| As a warning | Excess or rushing. Small, steady steps work better. |
Temperance upright meaning
Temperance shows a winged angel standing with one foot on dry land and one in a pool of water. The angel pours water from one golden cup into another in a smooth, steady flow. A triangle inside a square is marked on the robe, yellow irises grow by the water, and a path leads up to distant mountains where a crown of light shines.
Numbered fourteen, Temperance comes straight after Death, as healing after change. Upright, it means balance, patience, moderation and finding the middle way. It suggests you are blending different parts of your life well, or that you need to. Things are working, but slowly. Do not rush the mix.
A real-life example: someone wants to get fit and is tempted to train hard every day. Instead they mix three short runs a week with good sleep and better food. Six months later they are fitter than any crash plan made them. That steady blend is Temperance.
Temperance reversed meaning
Reversed, Temperance can point to excess, such as too much work, spending or partying, or to impatience and rushing. It can also mean parts of your life are clashing instead of working together.
- Signs: all-or-nothing thinking, overdoing it, burning out, or arguments where neither side will meet halfway.
- What may help: pick one area that is out of balance and make one moderate change, then give it a few weeks.
Temperance in love and relationships
If you’re in a relationship
A calm, balanced relationship where both people give and take. Patience and compromise are working. Reversed, an imbalance, such as one person doing all the work, or frequent clashes.
If you’re single
A steady, healthy match is more likely when you take things slowly. Balance your own life first. Reversed, rushing into something, or swinging between extremes.
Temperance in career and money
Good teamwork, steady progress and a balanced workload. A good time to combine skills or merge ideas. For money, moderation and a sensible budget pay off. Reversed, overwork, overspending or a team that is not gelling.
Temperance as a yes or no answer
On this site every card follows one rule. Temperance upright leans yes: balance and patience support it. Reversed, it leans not yet: the timing is off or the support is blocked, so wait and look again. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. Quiz: does Temperance fit your situation?
Reflect on Temperance
Pick an area of your life for three questions to think about.
Temperance and astrology
Temperance is linked to Sagittarius in the Golden Dawn system, the fire sign of meaning and long journeys. The card's slow mixing of fire and water fits a sign that seeks the middle path to a bigger goal. Systems vary, so follow your deck's guidebook if it says otherwise. How we made this page
Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.
How it works
We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.
Sources and background
- Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
- Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
- Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
- Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.
What this page cannot do
Tarot cannot predict the future, and a card does not decide what you should do. Decks and readers differ, so meanings vary. It is not medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.
