The Fool in one minute

Good or bad?Mostly good. It shows a fresh start with open eyes.
As a personA curious, open person at the start of something, or you at a turning point.
As adviceTake the first step. Trust yourself, and pack one safeguard.
As a warningRecklessness. Do not ignore clear warnings just because you feel bold.
How to remember it: A young traveller steps toward a cliff edge, a small dog at the heels and the sun overhead. Not a fall, a leap of faith.

The Fool upright meaning

The Fool shows a young traveller standing at the edge of a cliff, face lifted to the sky. A small bag hangs from a stick over one shoulder, a white rose is in one hand and a small white dog jumps at the heels. A bright sun shines behind, and snowy mountains rise in the distance. The step off the edge is a leap of faith, not a fall.

The Fool is numbered zero, the start of the Major Arcana journey. Upright, it means new beginnings, curiosity and trust. You may be starting something with no guarantee, such as a move, a course, a relationship or a creative project. The card does not say the path is easy. It says the first step is worth taking.

A real-life example: someone has wanted to learn pottery for years but keeps saying they are too old to start. They sign up for one beginner class. They do not know where it will lead, and that is The Fool: starting without needing the whole map.

Common mistake: Reading it as foolish or careless. It is about trust and starting, not about being silly.

The Fool reversed meaning

Reversed, The Fool can point to recklessness, such as jumping in without checking anything, or the opposite: fear that keeps you at the edge. It can also mean poor judgement, ignoring advice, or a start that was rushed.

  • Signs: impulsive choices, ignoring clear warnings, endless delay, or a fear of looking foolish.
  • What may help: write down the biggest risk, plan one safeguard, then take the first small step.

The Fool in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

A fresh chapter, a new spark, or a relationship that feels light and open again. It can also say to approach your partner with curiosity instead of old habits. Reversed, it may mean careless choices or fear of commitment.

If you’re single

Something new may be starting, or you are ready to meet people with an open mind. The card encourages you to try, and to stay honest and kind while you do. Reversed, you may be rushing in, or too afraid to begin.

The Fool in career and money

A new job, a change of direction or a fresh project. For money, it suggests a small experiment is fine, but do not risk what you cannot afford to lose. Reversed, a rash decision or a plan with no safety net.

The Fool as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. The Fool upright leans yes: it is a good moment to begin, with a little planning. Reversed, it leans not yet: the timing is off or the support is blocked, so wait and look again. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.

What this page cannot do

Tarot cannot predict the future, and a card does not decide what you should do. Decks and readers differ, so meanings vary. It is not medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.
