The Sun in one minute
| Good or bad? | Very good. It is one of the happiest cards in the deck. |
| As a person | A cheerful, confident and warm person, or a child. |
| As advice | Enjoy what is going well, be open, and share your light. |
| As a warning | Overconfidence. Check the details even when you feel sure. |
The Sun upright meaning
The Sun shows a large, smiling sun with long rays shining down. Below it, a happy child rides a white horse, arms open and holding a red banner. Behind them, tall sunflowers lean over a grey stone wall.
Numbered nineteen, The Sun comes after the confusion of The Moon. Upright, it means joy, success, clarity and energy. Things are going well or about to, and you can see clearly what is true. It is a good time to be open, confident and playful, and to celebrate what is working.
A real-life example: someone finally finishes a degree they studied for at night for four years. At graduation they feel proud, light and full of energy, and their family is there to cheer. That simple, open joy is The Sun.
The Sun reversed meaning
Reversed, The Sun does not usually turn bad. It means the joy is delayed, dimmed or harder to see, like a cloudy day. It can also point to overconfidence or low energy.
- Signs: feeling flat even when things are fine, waiting for good news, or being so sure of yourself that you miss details.
- What may help: spend time outside, notice one thing that is going well, and double-check any plan you feel overly sure about.
The Sun in love and relationships
If you’re in a relationship
A happy, warm and open relationship. You enjoy each other and things feel easy. It can point to celebrations or good news. Reversed, a temporary low or taking each other for granted.
If you’re single
You are radiant and attractive when you are being yourself. A joyful, uncomplicated connection is possible. Reversed, a little shyness or waiting for the right moment.
The Sun in career and money
Success, recognition and clear progress. A good time to share your work, ask for a raise or start something new. For money, a positive time. Reversed, success that is a bit delayed, or overconfidence in a plan.
The Sun as a yes or no answer
On this site every card follows one rule. The Sun upright leans yes: it points to a clear, positive outcome. Reversed, it leans not yet: the timing is off or the support is blocked, so wait and look again. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. How we made this page
Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.
How it works
We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.
Sources and background
- Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
- Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
- Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
- Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.
What this page cannot do
