The Three of Wands in one minute
| Good or bad? | Good. It shows progress and growth. |

| As advice | Keep your eyes on the horizon and stay ready for the next step. |
| As a warning | Getting impatient and pulling out before results arrive. |
The Three of Wands upright meaning
A man stands on a cliff edge with his back to us, looking out over a golden sea. Three wands are planted in the ground around him, and he rests his hand on one of them. He wears a red robe with a green sash. Far below, small sailing ships cross the water toward distant hills.
Threes are about first growth. Upright, the Three of Wands means progress, foresight and expansion. You have done the planning and taken a step, and now your ships are at sea. Waite linked it to enterprise, trade and established strength. The card asks you to keep looking ahead, stay ready for chances, and be patient while results arrive.
A real-life example: someone sent applications to five graduate programs abroad. A week later two schools ask for interviews. They stand at the window after reading the email, picturing a new city. Watching those first results come back is The Three of Wands.
The Three of Wands reversed meaning
Reversed, the Three of Wands can mean delays, setbacks or plans that do not go as expected. You may feel stuck at home while others move on. It can also point to poor planning, such as not thinking far enough ahead, or a fear of reaching wider.
- Signs: replies or results that keep coming late, disappointment at slow progress, or thinking too small for what you want.
- What may help: check what is in your control, follow up once, and add a back-up option so one delay does not stop everything.
The Three of Wands in love and relationships
If you’re in a relationship
The relationship is growing and you are looking ahead together. Travel or a long-term plan may be on the table. Reversed, delays in plans, or a partner who feels far away in body or mind.
If you’re single
Your world is widening, and love may come from further away than you expect, such as a trip or an online connection. Keep an open view. Reversed, waiting on someone who is slow to commit.
The Three of Wands in career and money
Growth and progress on a project you started, perhaps with clients in other places. Money can grow from earlier effort if you stay patient. Reversed, delays, a deal that stalls or plans that need more foresight.
The Three of Wands as a yes or no answer
On this site every card follows one rule. The Three of Wands upright leans yes: your earlier efforts are moving forward and the outlook is good. Reversed, it leans not yet: delays or a missing detail may slow things down, so give it more time. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. How we made this page
Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.
How it works
We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.
Sources and background
- Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
- Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
- Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
- Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.
