The Wheel of Fortune in one minute

Good or bad?Neutral to good. Change is coming, and it can help.
As a personSomeone riding a big change, or whose luck is turning.
As adviceAccept the cycle. Move with the turn, not against it.
As a warningYou cannot control everything. What rises also falls.
How to remember it: A wheel with four winged creatures in the corners and a sphinx on top. Everything turns.

The Wheel of Fortune upright meaning

The Wheel of Fortune shows a large wheel in the sky, covered in symbols, with figures around it. Many decks show a sphinx on top and a snake below, with the four creatures of the Gospels in the corners. The wheel turns, and what is up comes down and what is down comes up.

Upright, the Wheel means a turning point, a lucky break or a natural change in your circumstances. It reminds you that nothing stays the same. Ride the cycle: be ready for opportunity, and do not cling to the low points.

A real-life example: someone who has had a long, hard year suddenly gets an unexpected job offer. The Wheel is turning, and the timing is in their favour.

Common mistake: Assuming luck is always good. The wheel turns both ways, and the lesson is to adapt.

The Wheel of Fortune reversed meaning

Reversed, the Wheel points to bad timing, resistance to change or a run of setbacks. It can feel like things are out of your control. It also reminds you that the wheel keeps turning, so this is a phase, not a permanent state.

  • Signs: feeling unlucky, stuck in a pattern, or fighting change that is already happening.
  • What may help: focus on what you can control, learn from the pattern and wait for the next turn.

The Wheel of Fortune in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

A turning point in the relationship, with a natural change or a lucky development. It can mean a phase is changing. Reversed, repeating patterns or bad timing.

If you’re single

A change in your love life may be coming, or a chance meeting. It suggests timing is on your side. Reversed, repeating the same pattern or feeling out of luck.

The Wheel of Fortune in career and money

A change in direction, a lucky opportunity or a cycle ending and a new one starting. For money, ups and downs are normal, so plan for both. Reversed, setbacks and bad timing, which will pass.

The Wheel of Fortune as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. The Wheel of Fortune upright leans yes: the cycle is turning in your favour. Reversed, it leans not yet: the timing is off or the support is blocked, so wait and look again. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.

What this page cannot do

Tarot cannot predict the future, and a card does not decide what you should do. Decks and readers differ, so meanings vary. It is not medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.
